Sony reaches air quality targets

Bosses at electrical product giant Sony have revealed the firm has managed to meet and in some cases surpass air quality targets that had been set in 2006.

The firm's Green Management 2010 scheme was introduced by leaders who were keen to reduce the global company's carbon emissions over a five-year period.

An independent organisation has verified that the targets have indeed been reached.

The corporation managed to curb its greenhouse gas output by 31 per cent last year, compared with figures from 2000.

Key to the firm's success has been the transition on to renewable energy sources and the implementation of sophisticated power-saving equipment.

Some of Sony's most popular items such as the Bravia LCD TV have been produced to consume far less electricity, with the Blu-ray Disc recorder model seeing its power requirement fall by 50 per cent between 2008 and 2010.

More households and businesses are becoming conscious about the amount of energy they consume and Frost & Sullivan has predicted the use of smart meters in Europe will grow by 26 per cent by 2017.
