WWF questions IEA report on climate change
Nov 10 2011
The World Wildlife Fund has questioned a report by the International Energy Agency (IEA) that looks into future air quality levels.
According to the leader of WWF's global climate and energy initiative Samantha Smith, the study highlighted the possible impact the continued use of fossil fuels could have on the environment, but failed to promote renewable energy sources.
She also suggested some of the figures reported by the IEA could be inaccurate.
"WWF particularly questions the crucial assumption that global oil prices in 20 years will be only slighter higher than today," she remarked.
Indeed, Ms Smith stated that an extra three billion consumers are expected to enter the market from emerging economies and their energy needs could see oil prices and carbon emissions "go through the roof". Therefore, global focus on sustainable energy is vital, she added.
Last week, WWF stated that the exploration of shale gas should be halted until air monitoring results are analysed.
