Air Quality Monitoring
Singapore given air quality title for Asia
Feb 15 2011
The Asian Green City Index, commissioned by Siemens and carried out by the Economist Intelligence Unit, revealed that it is the greenest metropolis of 22 cities in the continent.
Siemens' chief sustainability officer Barbara Kux said: "We want to enable Asia's up-and-coming urban centres to achieve healthy growth rates coupled with a high quality of life."
The city was tested with regards to its energy and CO2 emissions, land use, transport, sanitation, air and water quality and environmental governance.
While Singapore City was named the greenest, Hong Kong, Seoul, Tokyo, Yokohama, Osaka and Taipei were picked as above-average metropolises.
The average list included Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Beijing and Shanghai among others.
Organisations such as the Singapore Environment Council are likely to have helped the city with this achievement, as they aim to protect the atmosphere in the nation, working with the government and schools to raise awareness of green goals.
