New York introduces 'tougher' air quality standards

Air quality in New York could be boosted by new measures that were announced this week.

The New York State Environmental Board has adopted new rules which are aimed at cutting the level of pollution created by industrial plants.

Power plants, factories and other facilities which plan to expand their operations must now install hi-tech pollution controls that will limit any increase in emissions.

The change forms part of the state's "new source review", which is a provision of the federal Clear Air Act.

"By taking this action, we are closing the door on the possibility that industrial plants could emit more smog and soot while avoiding new pollution controls," said Pete Grannis, department of environmental conservation commissioner.

"Hopefully, New York's approach will become a model for other states and possibly the federal government."

The news follows the announcement that New York and ten other north-east and mid-Atlantic states will be working together to reduce carbon concentration in fuels used in buildings and vehicles.
