London's air quality problems 'need addressing'

Oct 08 2009

The air quality in the UK's capital city needs to be addressed, according to one expert.

Darren Johnson is the chair of the London Assembly, an elected 25-member body that holds the mayor of London - Boris Johnson - to account about his activities and decisions.

Mr Johnson said that there are some serious air pollution problems in London which need to be addressed by the mayor's transport and air quality strategies.

His comments follow the publication of the European Cities Monitor survey, which voted London the best all-round metropolis on the continent for the 20th year in a row.

"On a couple of the criteria, London does come out badly. One of them is freedom from pollution […] we have got some problems which the mayor needs to address," stated Mr Johnson.

He added that the assembly will be looking at the mayor's draft economic development strategies next week and plans to make some recommendations.
