Air Quality Monitoring
Air quality 'deteriorating' in York
Jan 12 2010
Residents are being asked to attend meetings to discuss the growing problem of pollution along parts of Main Street in Fulford and Fulford Road, the York Evening Press revealed.
High levels of nitrogen dioxide, caused by heavy traffic flow, have led councillors for Fishergate to propose Air Quality Management Areas around the worst-affected areas.
Councillor Andy D'Agorne told the news provider that increased vehicle numbers, primarily on the A19, have brought about a drop in air quality.
He explained that the committees in the affected wards will be sending questionnaires to local residents to find out how wide they believe the management zones should be.
According to the World Health Organisation, long-term exposure to nitrogen dioxides could lead to a number of health concerns, particularly respiratory diseases.
