Water quality report proves damning for Welsh firm
May 20 2011
New statistics released by the Environment Agency this week have shown Welsh Water to be bottom of the pile when it comes to adhering to water quality rulings.
The utility provider was found to have been guilty of seven category two pollution incidents and only had a compliance rating of 96 per cent.
These figures relate to performance in 2009 and it was discovered that Wessex Water was the best firm during that period.
A statement released by the Environment Agency suggested the organisation was altering its operations to place more emphasis on helping the water companies that are deemed the worst offenders.
"We are moving to a system of self monitoring and reporting, audited by ourselves, which reduces duplicated effort and allows us to allocate our resources to more high risk sites," it read.
Last month, Dwr Cymru officially reopened a Carmarthenshire water treatment plant, after the firm had paid for a £9.9 million upgrade.
