Wastewater treatment to supply power to car

A wastewater process being trialled at a sewage treatment site in Bristol is attempting to generate enough energy to run a car.

GENeco has launched an experiment for the next six months to get a VW Beetle running on methane gas powered by human waste flushed down toilets of homes in the area.

It is being tried to see if the wastewater treatment can be used to effectively generate low-carbon fuel using sewage to create methane gas.

GENeco's general manger Mohammed Saddiq said: "Our site at Avonmouth has been producing biogas for many years which we use to generate electricity to power the site and export to the National Grid."

He added that the company wanted to run the vehicle to see if the energy could be used in a "sustainable and efficient way".

Last week, a Thames Water depot in Didcot revealed that it has created a sewage treatment process which captures methane to generate enough energy for 200 homes in the area.
