Wastewater treatment plant designed to protect Spain in droughts
May 04 2010
The system, designed by Severn Trent Services-Apliclor, will enable the re-use and supply of wastewater to Spain's Catalonia region, which includes Barcelona.
Speaking to the Barcelona Reporter on the effects this system will have on the area, Manuel Hernandez, director of the Catalan Water Agency (ACA), said: "It must create new tools to obtain higher levels of recovery."
The new water plant will provide treatment of wastewater for a variety of purposes, including helping during the region's frequent periods of drought.
In the last few years millions of gallons of water have been brought into the area to help the drought recovery.
Mr Hernandez hopes that the plant, along with 370 other treatment sites already in operation as part of the ACA's Urban Wastewater Treatment Programme (PSARU 2005), will enable the region to recover during these periods.
Set to open this year, the Alguaire treatment plant, occupying 3,500 sq m, will be one of 1,544 wastewater treatment facilities by the time PSARU 2005's plans have been completed.
