Spain's efforts are "tremendous news" for water quality
Oct 08 2009
James Leape, director general of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) said that evidence of the country taking the ratifications for the UN Watercourses Convention more than half way is positive for those worried about the global water situation.
His comments follow Spain's remarks to the United Nations General Assembly late last month, which claimed that the nation is committed to addressing issues of security, development and protection of the environment.
"This convention is not a dry legal instrument but the basis for us to share limited water resources and protect the vital human and natural assets of rivers, lakes and underground water," stated Mr Leape.
Director of conservation at WWF Spain Enrique Segovia added that the Guadiana and Tagus rivers are two of the waterways affected by the overexploitation of their resources.
WWF is one of the largest independent conservation organisations in the world.
