Poor water quality could mean removal of Blue Flag for British beach

Broughty Ferry in Scotland looks set to lose its Blue Flag status as a result of its water quality.

Dundee City Council councillor Bob Duncan announced that the attraction would probably not apply for the status next year, according to the Guide and Gazette.

He cited advice from Keep Scotland Beautiful as the reason for not aiming for the prestigious standards, as the organisation told the local authority that it would be nearly impossible for Broughty Ferry to improve its water quality sufficiently in the short term.

The publication pointed out that Blue Flag status requires beaches to meet certain requirements stipulated under the EU Bathing Water Directive, although such issues only relate to six of the 32 criteria applicants are judged on.

This week, oil firm Mark Group was fined £12,000 by Worcester Magistrates' Court after the Environment Agency brought a case against the company for reducing water quality and increasing pollution in the region.
