Fish introduced to River Churnet after water quality improvement

Fish have been re-stocked in the River Churnet following its successful recovery from contamination five years ago.

The Environment Agency released 500 Chubb into the water last week, following the damaging effects of pollution by agricultural waste, which had depleted fish stocks.

This move marks the completion of a fish re-introduction programme in the river.

Mick Buxton, Fisheries Officer, said that the cooperation of the public and anglers is essential in preventing pollution from having harmful, lasting effects on the countryside.

He added: "The money that allows us to re-stock rivers that have been affected by pollution comes from anglers who buy rod licences, but we do try to recoup the cost from polluters."

Earlier this month, the River Avon in Hampshire was picked out to receive additional help in improving its purity, as it has suffered from silt pollution from a poorly-maintained farm track for some time.
