Alice Springs' water quality 'to remain unaffected'

The water quality in the US town of Alice Springs will not be affected by the activities of companies exploring for uranium to the south of the area, one of the joint venture firms involved in the project has claimed.

Stephan Stander, project manager of Cameco, which started drilling at the Angela site in May and will finish in September, said that water monitoring during the exploration phase showed no impact on the local water supply, ABC News reported.

"In addition to that, from discussions that came out with the community reference group, we've undertaken to initiate a water supply study," he stated.

In related news, the Stawell Times reported earlier this week that customers in one Australian town are pleased that local water is now being sourced directly via a pipeline from a lake in the Grampians as it has caused a noticeable improvement in quality and a reduction in saline levels.
