Reliable H2S Odour Monitoring in Wastewater Treatment Applications

Jan 23 2015

The treatment of domestic and industrial sewage produces smells or odours such as hydrogen sulphide (H2S) or ammonia (NH3). As a result, waste water treatment plants that conduct these processes are often linked to odour problems and neighbouring community complaints.

Municipal waste water treatment plants are a particular issue due to their often close proximity to residential housing. The scale and predominately open design of older sites means that odour management at such sites be very challenging.

Water companies are committed to reducing odour from sewage treatment works but until these costly sites can be built to cover parts of where these odours arise, odour control measures will continue and require the following:

  • To measure the rate of odour release of each aspect of the sewage treatment and sludge handling processes and evaluate the effectiveness of the odour treatment units serving these areas
  • To quantify the overall odorous emissions currently generated from site

a1-cbiss, the UK distributor supply a data logger on behalf of App-Tek, which is called the OdaLog, designed to collect gas samples at frequent intervals. The OdaLog reliably records continuous data to help measure and quantify levels of odours such as H2S and NH3.

Whereas most other forms of gas detectors and monitors would fail due to gas sensors becoming saturated with toxic gas and corrosion occurring, the OdaLog has been built to withstand the nature of the humid, moist and toxic atmosphere.

The OdaLog is available to measure concentrations of gas down to 0.02ppb (parts per billion) however the most popular version is 0-200ppm (parts per million).

The OdaLog’s design incorporates a bull ring on the top of it, which allows a chain or a similar object to be attached so it can be lowered close to the source of H2S emissions. The design and the long life lithium battery of the OdaLog means it can be left in-situ for up to two weeks without worry of battery failure and / or sensor corrosion. In addition to this, the OdaLog is splash resistant (with a waterproof seal) and robust.

The OdaLog is perfect for data monitoring as its results can easily be captured and displayed using the accompanying OdaStat-G software when hooked up to a laptop or a PC where it stores up to 42000 data points.
