World's First Wireless Surface Water Monitoring System: CSignum's EM-2 Platform Enhances Water Quality Monitoring with Advanced Wireless Technology

Monitoring water quality is essential for managing pollution in natural water bodies and ensuring the health of aquaculture systems. CSignum offers a robust, flexible, and efficient solution that overcomes the challenges of traditional monitoring methods, enabling more effective data collection and analysis in these critical areas.

CSignum is a leader in wireless underwater communications, pioneering cable-free data solutions using patented low-frequency electromagnetic (EM) fields. This innovative technology ensures autonomous, reliable data transmission through the water-air boundary, water column, seabed, and underwater structures to networks on land and in the air.

We’re delighted to showcase our latest innovation, the EM-2 wireless platform for IoT sensor data and control, at WWEM. The EM-2 interfaces with many common underwater sensors, enabling wireless communication from beneath the water’s surface to above or directly to land.

EM-2 represents a breakthrough in wireless communication, employing electromagnetic fields to transmit data through water, ice, concrete, and rock, effectively overcoming the limitations of traditional wireless technologies. By harnessing electromagnetic field signalling (EMFS), data can be reliably transmitted from underwater or underground environments to above-surface devices.

The EM-2 platform is crucial for the reliable transmission and retrieval of sensor data, essential for monitoring and protecting resources and critical infrastructure across various key sectors, including water quality monitoring. It facilitates wireless communication in both fresh and saltwater scenarios, ensuring the timely assessment and management of environmental conditions in inland and coastal waterways, around offshore structures, and in aquaculture installations.

EM-2 establishes a wireless communication link that surpasses the limitations of acoustic, optical, and cabled underwater communications, enabling real-time data transmission. Key benefits of the EM-2 include:

  • Resilience: Unaffected by biofouling, turbidity, or environmental noise, ensuring consistent performance.
  • Flexibility: Easily integrated with various sensor packs and compatible with industry-standard data interfaces.
  • Environmental Compatibility: No adverse effects on aquatic life, making it ideal for sustainable monitoring solutions.
  • Diverse Environments: Operates through water, ice, rock, and soil.

Monitoring and assessing ecological health are vital components in combating and mitigating problems in critical inland and coastal waterways. Remote sensing with EM-2 provides rapid, accurate data to assess and respond to ecosystem changes.

Traditional underwater communication methods face challenges such as cable entanglement, unreliable communications, and signal degradation. EM-2 offers a reliable, cable-free alternative, providing flexibility in deployment and superior performance across various environmental conditions.

CSignum remains committed to advancing underwater and underground data transmission. Future plans include enhancing range, data rate, and battery life while offering cellular/satellite backhaul and CSignum Cloud data analytical services.

CSignum’s EM technology supports critical sectors including infrastructure security & defence, environmental monitoring, aquaculture monitoring & actuator control, and subsea structure industries. By enabling these sectors to digitally transform and scale remote communication systems, CSignum enhances sustainability, performance, and preparedness for unforeseen events, driving the future of underwater data communication.
