Devon and Cornwall's water quality 'important to surfers'

A surfing group has backed plans to reveal the water quality of beaches in Devon, Cornwall, Dorset and Somerset.

Next month, a new website is expected to be introduced, which will inform residents about the hygiene standards at beaches in southern England, BBC News reports.

It will be launched by South West Water and Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) and people will be able access information over sewage discharges on the shorelines, caused by heavy rain.

SAS campaign manager Andy Cummins said: "It will allow them to make an informed decision about when they go in the water."

There are around 22,000 Combined Sewer Overflows, which could result in the pollution of beaches and coastlines around the UK if heavy rain caused them to overspill.

Ed Mitchell, of the Environment Agency, stated that revealing information on the standard of water at Britain's beaches will help visitors make choices "about the best locations to visit and enjoy".
