Anglers blast Scottish government over river sewage
Apr 19 2012
Anglers who operate on the River Leven have blasted the Scottish government over its waste management controls, after recent claims say the river has been polluted with sewage for around three years.
An Alexandria fisherman, alerted the Lennox Herald to the problem, who reported the situation as being quite out of control. Reporters from the news outlet found that sewage was spilling into the water and the odour was rancid. This occurred the following day as well, with a fresh round of sewage being pumped into the water.
One Levenvale angler, who did not want named, told Lennox Herald: “This has been happening on and off for around three years but in the past few months it has got worse.
“All the weed beds have died and you don’t see any fish swimming near the railings anymore. Before you used to see a lot of perch and roach swimming in large shoals.”
The water board has responded to these claims insisting that the sewage has been created as a result of a blocked pipe in Alexandria. This has caused wastewater to back up and discharge into the River Leven.
