Infrared gas detector offers unsurpassed stability in harsh environments

Crowcon Detection Instruments recently introduced the IR Plus, a highly advanced fixed-position infrared (IR) hydrocarbon gas detector, further expanding its highly reputable range of gas detection technologies. With over 50 years of specialised experience in gas detection, Crowcon has developed this instrument to deliver real-time measurement and fail-safe detection of methane, propane, and a variety of other hydrocarbon gases and vapours. The IR Plus is specifically designed to enhance safety in environments characterised by a high risk of fire and explosion, thereby protecting both personnel and infrastructure.

This next-generation detector incorporates dual IR waveband technology within a heated optical arrangement that avoids the use of beam splitting. Instead, it employs Stay-clIR™ coated hydrophobic reflectors, significantly increasing its resistance to environmental contaminants such as dust, moisture, and corrosive agents. These design choices contribute to the detector’s exceptional stability and operational reliability, particularly in demanding industrial settings, including offshore installations.

Performance validation has been carried out in accordance with the Chinese Humidity Test standard GB/T 2423.3-2006, which assesses the resilience of equipment under conditions of elevated temperature and humidity. Among the devices evaluated, the IR Plus was the only IR detector to maintain continuous fault-free operation under exposure to sustained conditions of 40°C and relative humidity exceeding 93%. This robust performance underscores the unit’s suitability for deployment in the most challenging environments.

The IR Plus not only improves detection reliability but also mitigates the risk of false alarms and unplanned downtime. As a result, it provides a critical layer of safety assurance for personnel working in hazardous atmospheres.
