Cooled Long Wave Infrared Camera Enhances Gas Detection Sensitivity

May 28 2013

The FLIR GF306 gas detection camera from FLIR Systems employs a cooled Long Wave (LW) Infrared detector for greater sensitivity enabling it to scan large areas rapidly, pinpoint leaks in real time and provide verification of processes.

It is ideal for monitoring applications that are difficult to reach with contact measurements tools and literally thousands of potential leak sites can be scanned per shift without the need to interrupt the process. As a non-contact measurement device, the FLIR GF306 is exceptionally safe allowing potentially dangerous leaks to be monitored from several metres away.

Able to visualise a wide range of gases in including ethylene, propylene, acetic acid, ammonia, SF6 and other VOCs that cannot be seen with the naked eye - the GF306 gas detection camera has proven itself in the electrical utility, petrochemical, chemical and refrigerant industries.

A large amount of the equipment used in the distribution of high voltage electrical power uses Sulphur Hexafluoride (SF6) as an insulating gas. This allows the equipment to be more compact and protected from the elements inside substations. The FLIR GF306 is extremely sensitive to SF6 leaks - a greenhouse gas that is 24,000 times more dangerous to the environment than Carbon Dioxide.

Petrochemical plants make hydrocarbon substances using base feedstocks from their oil refining processes either by conversion processes or further separation that is not normally carried out at an oil refinery. Leakages of many of the volatile chemicals used or made in these plants can be readily visualised using the FLIR GF306 gas detection camera thereby protecting the environment, reducing lost product and eliminating potentially flammable emissions.
