New multi-million pound flow metrology programme

A new multi-million pound, three-year, UK Government funded programme for flow metrology will be managed by TUV NEL (UK) from its unique research facility in East Kilbride.

The new programme will build on the successes of previous programmes managed and executed by TUV NEL for DIUS (Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills) and will enhance TUV NEL’s position as one of the world’s leading authorities on flow measurement. The programme will introduce important new areas of flow research including carbon capture, flare-gas emissions, the characterisation of complex flows and non-Newtonian fluids. Accurate flow measurement is essential for many industries from pharmaceutical manufacture to oil and gas production. The flow metrology programme supports and develops the UK’s national infrastructure for flow measurement testing and calibration through research and development. TUV NEL’s unique East Kilbride facility allows it to simulate on an industrial scale flows of liquids, gases and multiphase mixtures, containing a combination of fluids and gases.  Projects proposed for the new programme will help in the development of TUV NEL’s abilities to address increasingly challenging applications of new technologies.

“The new flow metrology programme will address key industry issues in the oil and gas industry and in other sectors,” explains TUV NEL Business Manager Jane Sattary. “There will be a focus on research into the metering of emerging energy sources that are important to the UK, such as heavy oils and liquefied natural gas (LNG). We will also be researching the flow metering needs of important developing technologies and the metering of complex flows.”
