Shropshire residents reduce landfill demand

May 28 2009

When it comes to preserving the environment, it seems that Shropshire residents are leading the way.

According to the Ludlow Advertiser, people in Shropshire recycled or composted almost half (47.3 per cent) of household waste products in the last 12 months – representing a four per cent increase on the previous year.

The biggest efforts were made by those in the south Shropshire area, with residents managing to dispose of 57.8 per cent of household waste in an environmentally friendly manner.

"Shrewsbury and Atcham borough recorded 46 per cent, the former Oswestry borough 45.9 per cent and Bridgnorth 40.5 per cent," the newspaper noted.

The total amount of waste sent to landfill sites has dropped by around 12 per cent.

In related news, a spokesperson from environmental group Waste Watch said earlier this week that the UK is lagging behind when it comes to the recycling of electrical goods such as television sets and computer monitors.
