Government announces review of environmental legislation

Feb 09 2011

The government has announced a review of its environmental legislation in order to look at ways to improve it.

Secretary of state for energy and climate change Chris Huhne revealed that a study into the feed-in-tariff (FIT) scheme will take place.

The FITs were launched to help the government reach its 2020 renewable energy targets by boosting the amount of green fuel used in the UK as a result of paying people to create their own environmentally-friendly electricity.

It also provides bonus payments for electricity exported into the grid and a reduction on fuel bills from any energy produced.

Mr Huhne stated that 21,000 installations, such as wind turbines and solar panels, have been registered since the FIT initiative was introduced last year, which shows that the scheme is "working well".

However, he noted that the review will look at ways to correct the early teething problems of the environmental legislation in order to make some improvements to it.
