Environmental legislation officials examine how businesses can go green

Feb 21 2011

Businesses have been encouraged to do their bit to go green after environmental legislation officials met last week to discuss things they could do to reduce carbon emissions.

Representatives from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and the Department of Energy and Climate Change met for a meeting of the Green Economy Council.

They discussed ways the government could work with industry professionals to implement a low-carbon economy in the UK.

Sam Jarvis, head of communications at Waste Watch, said one way to motivate companies to be more environmentally-friendly would be to encourage them with financial benefits for reducing waste.

However, he also noted that firms are becoming more conscious of their actions, saying they are "increasingly making the environment one of the key factors".

Mr Jarvis stated that this is currently easier for larger businesses and small and medium-sized enterprises need to be given support to "get on to this journey of sustainability".
