EA begins electronic waste tracking project

Jun 04 2009

The Environment Agency (EA) has launched a new pilot project enabling businesses to electronically track the collection and transfer of their waste.

Introduced to clamp down on fly tipping, the scheme will be run by six waste companies in the south-east of England.

A web-based tracking system will be used to create waste transfer notes using mobile computer technology.

EA waste crime innovation programme manager Paul Keay said: "With commercial, industrial and construction waste data collected electronically - including tonnage, type of waste, place of origin and destination - business and industry will be able to ensure their waste is being recycled and disposed of legally."

The data will also help the EA to identify new recycling opportunities.

In related news, the EA has issued a permit to Veolia ES Recovery Nottinghamshire for its proposed waste incinerator.

The facility will use modern technology to burn waste and create electrivity.
