Consultancy helps channel gases from African landfill site

Apr 30 2009

SLR, an independent international environmental consultancy, has revealed that it is assisting one of Africa's busiest landfill sites in capturing gases released in the decomposition process.

The organisation's landfill gas team, based in SLR's Shrewsbury office, worked on the methane gas extraction project which will provide around 8MW of power to the South African national grid system in the future.

As the site takes up to 3.500 tonnes of waste daily, gases from the site are being channeled and combusted to prevent greater emissions of greenhouse gases, such as methane.

Grant Pearson, an associate from SLR, stated that the firm's major role in the proceedings was to "provide procedural support to keep the project moving forward and to ensure that the environmental, social and financial benefits of the scheme could be realised."

Another recently successful landfill-related operation was announced in the UK this week, as the BBC reported that the Renfrewshire site in Scotland has now been sealed following its October 2007 closure.
