Benn promises 'overhaul' of packaging

Jun 10 2009

British consumers can expect to see a major overhaul of their packaging over the next ten years, it has been claimed.

Under plans announced by environment secretary Hilary Benn this week, the government will look at tackling waste throughout the whole production chain.

Consumers will be encouraged to report excessive packaging to Trading Standards, while the Waste & Resources Action Programme will work with manufacturers and retailers to help them reduce waste.

The government will also work with local authorities to improve and expand household recycling services.

Commenting on the plans, Mr Benn said: "In a few years time, I want people to be able to shop without having to worry about what they're going to do with the packaging when they get home and where it will go after they've disposed of it."

Meanwhile, the government issued grants to five organisations earlier this week through the Defra Anaerobic Digestion Demonstration Programme to create energy through organic matter.
