How to Get Personalised Pollution Alerts for Your City with Allairgoo

Poor air quality is becoming an increasingly serious problem faced by cities worldwide. The World Health Organisation's (WHO) urban air quality database monitors outdoor air quality in 1,600 cities across 91 countries, and their latest findings has prompted a call for greater awareness of the health risks caused by air pollution.

As air quality deteriorates, the number of health risks caused by air pollution become more prominent. These health risks including asthma and other chronic respiratory illnesses, heart disease, strokes, and cancer. The WHO's research strongly demonstrates that contributing factors to air pollution include our reliance on fossil fuels, continual dependence on cars and other vehicles, inefficient use of energy in buildings, and the use of biomass for cooking and heating. In China, for example, coal is still the main source of energy. Consequently, fighting air pollution will remain one of the most important tasks for the Chinese government. You can read more about this topic and how China is planning to tackle this problem in this article: Air Pollution in China Today.

While this news isn’t exactly pleasant, the launch of Allairgoo, an air pollution notification app that enables users to keep informed of air pollution in their cities and the associated health risks at the push of a button, certainly provides step in the right direction.

What is Allairgoo? And how does it work?

A simple concept, the Allairgoo app compiles public data on air pollution in 1,400 cities around the world, delivering notifications and alerts directly to the user’s iPhone. While the free version provides basic weather reports and pollution information, the paid, premium version offers further features, including:

  • Advanced pollution information
  • Personalised statistics based on your location
  • Push notifications indicating dangerous air pollution thresholds

Despite its unsuccessful Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign last year, the Allairgoo app is now available to download from the App Store for iOs, the paid version costing £8.99 in the UK.

What countries does Allairgoo cover?

The app currently supplies air pollution data for 1400 cities across the USA, the UK, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Canada, China, India, Hong-Kong, and Singapore. For the countries not currently covered by the app, the company is developing the ‘ZlikaBox’, a promising Arduino-run sensor system which will measure indoor air quality, including temperature and humidity, particle pollution, N02, and ozone.

Is Allairgoo for me?

With its user-friendly interface and hassle-free alert system, Allairgoo claims to be an app not just for asthma or respiratory illness sufferers, but for anyone wanting to live a healthier life in an increasingly polluted area. Removing any complicated information and jargon, the app is designed to help anyone decipher air pollution data with ease. Whether you have health concerns for yourself and loved ones or are simply curious about air pollution and its effects in your city, Allairgoo offers straightforward and personalised insight into the air that we breathe.
