Air Quality Monitoring
Air quality in York has been boosted by £150,000
Jan 04 2013
The government has given York a massive handout of £150,000 to help improve air quality in the city – the largest amount of funding that any city will be given.
The funding will go towards five specific schemes in the city, which was especially picked because of its low emission strategies that were already in place, reports The York Press.
One of these schemes is a public information campaign which is designed to raise awareness of the health impact of air pollution.
Indeed, York is no stranger to air pollution, with approximately 150 deaths occuring each year as a direct result of air pollution.
A huge contributor to the amount of air pollution in the city is the emissions released from cars and taxis. It is hoped that, with the funding, individuals in the area will be more inclined to choose low-emission cars and other modes of transport.
As part of the scheme, residents will be encouraged to try out low-emission vehicles.
There will be open showcases, where drivers can come and have a proper try out and buy if they are happy with the product.
Another scheme will help monitor the effect of the measures, to ensure that they are being well utilised.
If successful, other boroughs may choose to put similar measures into place.
The money will come from Defra and will be a one off payment.
“This funding will allow us to support and implement further our push for low emissions in York,” said councillor Dave Merrett, cabinet member for transport, planning and sustainability.
“The opportunity to educate residents about air pollution and the damage it can cause, along with the promotion of low-emission vehicles, will be a big boost to improving air quality in the city.”
