New Emissions Monitoring Solutions

Jan 27 2012

In light of increasing environmental legislation and the cost pressures that waste to energy and biomass plants face, Siemens Industry Automation & Drive Technologies (UK) has bolstered its portfolio of emissions monitoring solutions, with integration at the heart of its offering.

The Siemens CEM System Manager (CSM) integrated process control and emissions monitoring solution combines three systems in one for the ultimate efficiency. Whereas traditionally industry would have to use a plant-wide control system, a Continuous Emissions Monitoring system and a reporting function, all can now be integrated within a single platform which is currently undergoing MCERTS accreditation.

Integrating emissions monitoring aids compliance with the new Industry Emissions Directive (IED). This holistic approach is achieved using PCS-7 as a proven standard integration platform.

To further enhance its capabilities, Siemens IA&DT has now secured a contract with Gasmet Technologies Oy to incorporate its FTIR (Fourier Transform Infra Red) gas analyser as part of its CEM system solutions package. This further strengthens Siemens industry-leading offering which provides plants with an end-to-end solution.

Bob Lane, process analytics business manager, Siemens Sensors & Communications, said: “Waste-to-energy and biomass plant owners and operators can now consider a more joined-up approach to emissions monitoring. This not only simplifies disparate control systems but also minimises the risk of non-compliance with legislation, supports predictive maintenance strategies and increases overall operational efficiency. The development of waste-to-energy plants is increasing as society, the public and private sectors seek new ways to dispose of waste, and this is only set to rise. It is critical therefore that plants are as efficient as possible to prosper.

“Siemens’ new CSM concept is the first of its kind to offer an integrated approach and this, coupled with our Gasmet contract to offer FTIR analysers, means we can offer plants a complete solution. Integration is at the heart of our holistic approach to helping industry drive value and efficiency forward and the waste to energy sector is no exception to this.”
