The Benefits of the 6400 Visibility Sensor From Met One Are Clear to See.

Oct 26 2017

ET is proud to introduce the All Environment Visibility Sensor (Model 6400) from Met One to its extensive meteorological monitoring portfolio. Used to indicate present visibility, providing diagnostic information and operating within a range of 20ft-50miles (6m-80km), the 6400 is a new sensor for applications which require high accuracy over an extended range of visibility. For ease of use It includes both digital and relay outputs.

Common visibility deterioration can be due to a high particle concentration and / or high humidity. The origin of the particles may be sourced from smog, vehicle emissions and other sources such as wood burning and sandstorms.

With the 6400, visibility is detected by using widely accepted principles of forward scattering. A high output infrared LED transmitter projects light into a sample volume and light scattered in a forward direction is collected by the receiver. The light source is modulated to provide excellent rejection of background noise and natural variations in background light intensity.

Sensors can be configured to stream data at predefined intervals or can be used in the polled mode which outputs data only when required. A further useful feature of the 6400 is that it can compare levels to pre-set relay thresholds, so when alarm conditions are reached the relay output is switched. Visibility thresholds can be set to any value within the instrument range.

The 6400 sensor is constructed around a compact, light-weight housing, which can be installed on a simple pipe mast. They are constructed entirely of corrosion resistant materials for durability. The standard unit includes small heaters to prevent condensation on the optics. Optional hood heaters are available for areas where the sensor will operate in freezing weather. Transmitter and receiver hoods are designed to divert precipitation away from the optical paths making the 6400 durable to any weather condition.

The model 6400 is designed to provide both accuracy and reliability in a cost effective package and features ease of field serviceability.

Typical applications include: Synoptic Stations, Lighthouses, Highways, Resort areas, Shipboard and other marine platforms, Aviation
