Shipping body calls for global action on emissions

An influential shipping organisation has suggested that a global approach to boosting air quality by cutting down on harmful emissions is needed.

The UK Chamber of Shipping has stated that while measures such as the proposed Emissions Trading System could work, it is necessary to introduce environmental legislation that would cover the whole world, rather than just Europe.

Leaders at the organisation have called on the international shipping industry to "leave the door open" to all potential options that could have a positive impact on CO2 emissions.

Director general of the British Chamber of Shipping Mark Brownrigg said in-depth discussions on all proposals is required.

"This is a complex international debate for which we need active participation from the shipping industry and governments to find a genuine solution. This must be global … rather than regional," he commented.

Recent reports conducted by the European Commission showed that trawlers who emit fewer emissions in their operations are often more profitable than those who use big, environmentally-damaging boats.
