MSP raises air quality concerns over biomass plant

An MSP has voiced her concerns over a possible deterioration in air quality in Dundee if plans for a new biomass plant are approved by the government.

Jenny Marra told the Courier that "immediate answers" were needed on the real impact the site will have on the area.

The Labour representative also raised doubts over the visual implications the King George Wharf site would have.

Forth Energy - which is a collaboration between Forth Ports and Scottish & Southern Energy - has submitted the plans for the plant, which will burn imported wood to power up to 160,000 homes.

"The air quality concerns are paramount. The proximity to residential areas is of immediate concern - This is another issue that needs clarification before a decision is taken by government," Ms Marra told the publication.

Opposition to the plant has already been demonstrated, as protestors blocked the access roads to a Forth Energy-owned refinery last month, which resulted in seven arrests.
