London 'needs to boost air quality before Olympics'

More effort needs to be made to improve the air quality in London ahead of the 2012 Olympic Games.

Helene Mulholland, writing for the Guardian, raised concerns about the high levels of pollution in the city.

She stated: "Poor air quality is one of the biggest public health problems facing the capital."

The writer commented that in the lead up to the London Olympics next year, more pressure will be on the city to reduce its contamination levels.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson has stated that efforts will be made to cut down on high levels of pollutants and last week announced the release of 90 new green buses in an attempt to reduce CO2 emissions.

Despite this, Ms Mulholland suggested that a lot needs to be done in the next 15 months to meet expectations and added: "Let's hope the race is won so that athletes and spectators breathe in cleaner air next year."
