London borough 'has big air quality problem'

Sep 13 2010

The London boroughs of Haringey and Enfield have been shown to have big air quality problems.

Long-term exposure to air pollution resulted in 277 deaths in the area in 2008, figures from the Greater London Authority showed.

Speaking to the Hornsey Journal, Edmonton Labour MP Andy Love said: "Edmonton, like many other constituencies across the city, suffers from poor air quality and this only serves to exacerbate existing conditions people suffer from, such as asthma."

He added that the high number of premature deaths as a result of poor air quality in the area was "concerning".

Mr Love reassured residents, stating that Enfield Council has a plan to tackle the problem of air pollution by encouraging people to use their cars less.

It has a Walk to School programme, a Car Sharing initiative and good transport links.

Residents have also been given advice by the council on how to reduce the amount of pollution they produce when driving, including avoiding heavy accelerating and turning the engine off when stuck in traffic.
