iPhone application reveals air quality of cars

Oct 06 2010

Drivers looking to buy a new 60-registered car will be able to find out the air quality produced by the vehicle following the release of an iPhone application by Volvo.

The tool, launched in association with CleanGreenCars.co.uk, shows the level of emissions released by the car and what the impact is on local air quality, as well as human health.

Carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons and particulates will be detected by the mobile phone application so that drivers can make environmentally-friendly choices over which car they purchase.

Volvo Car UK's managing director Peter Rask said: "By using the information on our app, drivers can genuinely help improve local air quality."

In July 2010, Volvo launched its Emissions Equality campaign, which allows drivers to access information about the total emissions data of their car.

At the time, the manufacture reported that toxic fumes are the cause of 50,000 deaths in Britain every year, according to government figures.
