Introducing WEPO – 2015’s Innovative Wearable Air Pollution Sensor
Jan 21 2015
As the world develops an increasing concern for environmental stability companies are coming up with some incredibly innovative ways of tapping into this mentality. Wearable technology was one of the biggest tech trends of 2014, as discussed in The Future of Air Monitoring and Wearable Technology and Is Wearable Air-Pollution Technology Set to Sweep the Globe? And in 2015, wearable tech’s popularity is set to continue with the introduction of ground-breaking products such as WEPO. This year, technology, health and environmental awareness combine in the form of a next generation wearable device that’s compatible with smartphones and smartwatches. Intelligent and intuitive, WEPO actively counts the number of steps its wearer takes while simultaneously directing them towards cleaner air.
Introducing… WEPO!
Short for ‘Wearable Air Pollution Sensor,’ WEPO is essentially a miniature box that detects traces of carbon monoxide. It’s discreetly attached to a person’s belt and measures ambient air quality as a person moves through their day-to-day routine. When synced with the WEPO app it uses a smartphone or smartwatch to alerts wearers when air quality becomes dangerously low. The device connects with phones and watches using Bluetooth Low Energy. Thanks to the use of an ultra-efficient 2000mAH battery it offers wearers around 20 hours of battery life.
Global relevance
While WEPO is based in India the company plans to launch its product to a global market. In countries such as China air pollution is a serious concern and causes a huge number of deaths and illnesses every year. WEPO is designed to help wearers minimise their intake of airborne chemicals and breathe in the cleanest air possible.
Looking to the future
WEPO’s carbon monoxide sensing capabilities are extremely impressive yet according to developers there’s still more to come! In the future, WEPO hopes to release a second generation of the device that’s armed with a series of additional sensors designed to detect nitrogen dioxide, particulate matter and other traces of air pollution.
Turning smart devices into health enhancement tools
The current version of the WEPO application is compatible with Android and iOS mobile devices, as well as AndroidWear smartwatches. Once again, the company is already looking forward to the future and has plans to roll out Apple Watch compatibility in the next few months.
Creating a crowdfunding buzz
Already, the Indian based company has created a huge amount of chatter! Its Indiegogo campaign smashed its goal of US$10,000 in a matter of days and is now looking at launching a second phase to fast-track future developments.
Hitting consumer shelves mid 2015
Thanks to its wildly successful consumer reception WEPO is now taking pre-orders for the device. Buyers can snap one up for the discounted price of US$249 (delivery in August) or a post-holiday season price of US$399 (delivery in July).
