Complaints lodged about Fijian landfill site

Dec 29 2008

The department of environment in Fiji has received complaints concerning one of the country's landfill sites, it has emerged.

According to the Fiji Prisons and Corrections Service, Naboro Landfill - a site close to Naboro Prison - is emanating what it describes as an unbearable smell.

The odour levels are posing a danger to the health of inmates at the prison, claimed the service.

Auta Mociesuva, deputy commissioner of prisons, explained: "We have written to the Lands Department and raised our concerns about it and they had assured us they would rectify the problem."

The department of environment released a statement recently stating that it is working towards tackling the smell and plans to install facilities designed to minimise the odour.

Last week it was revealed that homes in north Belfast could be powered using the methane generated by the millions of tonnes of rubbish discarded at a local landfill site.
