Car manufacturers start to meet air quality targets

A growing number of vehicle manufacturers are starting to meet air quality standards that have been set by the EU.

European leaders want to see new production models produce CO2 emissions that measure no more than 130g/km by next year.

According to Clean Green Cars, there are now nine firms that have already fallen in line with the updated environmental legislation.

Fiat is the best performing brand, with its fleet churning out just 116.6 g/km of CO2 - marking a 6.5 per cent improvement on figures from 2010.

Other companies that have driven down their emissions include Citroen, Toyota, Seat, Mini, Peugeot, Alpha Romeo, Suzuki and Hyundai.

Jay Nagley published the report and he suggested that gas-guzzling models will depreciate rapidly in the next few years, as it becomes socially unacceptable to drive vehicles that are so harmful to the environment.

Last month, BMW was labelled the most sustainable car manufacturer in the world by the Dow Jones.
