Air and noise pollution row breaks out in Runcorn

Dec 07 2012

A debate has erupted in Runcorn, Cheshire, as to whether or not air and noise pollution tests close to an incinerator are up to the job.

According to campaigners, Ineos Chlor's tests on its generator are not returning correct data because they are being carried out at just one location, which is stopping people knowing what damage is really being done.

The Hagati campaign group claim that because the tests are taking place downwind from the proposed location for the plant ten per cent of the time, the true level of toxic particles will go unmeasured 90 per cent of the time.

This has led to the tests being described as "inadequate" by campaigners, including group chairman Jeff Meehan and fellow member Sue Bowden, who say that the noise figures measured aren't correct either.

Because these measurements are counted separately rather than as a sum, the real figures are not being seen and many are worried that the proposals will go ahead with the incorrect data having been considered.

Those behind the project need to take the issue seriously because one of the conditions involved with building it is that air and noise monitoring is performed for 12 months.

It means that the plant cannot function fully without council approval but Ineos Chlor say that they have seen the tests fully approved while a second test unit, set to be launched in February, has also been given the green light.

According to the Runcorn and Widnes Weekly, Ms Bowden wrote a letter to the Development Control Committee urging action to be taken before it is too late.

"Surely anyone can see that there needs to be monitoring surrounding a site of possible pollution so that a more realistic measurement can be sought and so that residents who live in Runcorn and pay their taxes can be assured that they are not in any danger of being subjected to life threatening pollution," she said.

Committee chiefs have since deferred the matter.
