Action to be taken to improve air quality in Wales

Aug 16 2010

Councillors are expected to meet this week to discuss ways to improve air quality in Wales.

This is because the air pollution in areas of Swansea was found to be so bad that they were failing to meet environmental targets.

South Wales Evening Post reported that as well as Hafod, which has been declared an Air Quality Management Area since September 2001, there are two more regions suffering poor standards.

On Thursday (August 19th), councillors are expected to meet to discuss ways to tackle the problems for the areas of Sketty and Fforestfach.

Ward councillor Huw Rees told the newspaper that it is likely the poor air quality is down to an increase in traffic around the areas.

He said: "I have noticed that the smoke from cars is increasing because sometimes they have to queue one behind the other for about ten cars."

This comes after it was revealed that Storrington in West Sussex also has low air quality, after readings showed that levels of nitrogen dioxide were above the national maximum amount.
