NOW ONDEMAND

Inorganic anions and cations are major components of drinking water, and are responsible for its unique taste and hardness.  However, some components, such as nitrite, bromide, strontium, manganese, and others represent risks to human health when consumed in excess of prescribed amounts. Other components, such as sodium and potassium should be consumed with caution among those at risk for heart disease or allergic reaction. Even fluoride, necessary for healthy teeth, becomes dangerous if taken in excess.

Knowing the ionic composition of other types of water, such as surface water, can aid in understanding both environmental processes as well as the influence of industrial activities on natural water sources. Information about ionic composition of processed waters (including waste water) can also provide insights into the effectiveness of treatment processes.

The analytical center of Lumex Instruments has developed several analytical protocols to analyze surface, natural, potable, and waste water samples using capillary electrophoresis systems Capel®, also manufactured by Lumex Instruments.

Join our expert as we offer an in depth discussion of actual analytical tasks in the water industry and provide details of the proposed analytical methods.

KEY LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • What analytical tasks are performed in the modern water treatment industry
  • Why it is so important to perform chemical analysis of all kinds of water samples
  • Which components can be precisely controlled with Lumex developed protocols and how these protocols can be performed on our capillary electrophoresis systems

Dr. Vadim M. Okun, PhD (Lumex Instruments)

Vadim Okun received his PhD in analytical biochemistry from the St. Petersburg Institute of Technology. His research, in collaboration with the Russian Academy of Science, focused on the development of highly sensitive antigen–antibody-based detection systems. After, Vadim continued his work in analytical biochemistry first at the German Biotechnology Center, Braunschweig and later at the Vienna Biocenter, Austria. Dr. Okun joined Lumex Instruments as project manager in 2005 and is responsible for the development and promotion of capillary electrophoresis (CE) instruments and related analytical applications. His areas of expertise include CE analyses of food and beverage, ecological analysis, and biotech assays.
