Cybersecurity, cloud, and control rooms: why OT cyber awareness starts with collaboration
In a recent expert-led discussion, panellists from across the water and industrial sectors delved into the complexities of IT/OT convergence, cybersecurity protocol, and the cultural shift needed to protect our essential systems.
In a world where critical infrastructure is increasingly digitalised, cybersecurity within operational technology (OT) environments is under more scrutiny than ever before.
If you’ve ever questioned how secure your SCADA systems are, or what it really takes to ensure operational data can be transmitted and stored safely, this conversation is a must-watch.
The panel covered a wide range of key themes - from the latency challenges of moving OT systems to the cloud, to how MQTT protocols must be enhanced with security layers like TLS.
People are the key
The importance of edge computing was another hot topic. Especially when low-latency and real-time availability are non-negotiable in the OT world.
But beyond the tech, the speakers agreed: cybersecurity isn’t just a technical challenge - it’s a management and communication challenge too.
“People are the key,” said one panellist, emphasising how vital it is to have a common language between IT and OT teams.
Without it, even the best tools will fail.
Another panelist added: “You can have incredible technology, but if you don’t know how to use it, and you don’t have the trained people and the right processes in place, it won’t protect you.”
Whether you’re in operations, digital strategy, or cyber governance, this conversation offers valuable insights into how the sector must evolve.
