Water firms 'must do more' on pollution

Oct 27 2008

English and Welsh water firms must to more to cut down the risk of pollution, it has been claimed.

According to the Environment Agency (EA), water companies were responsible for one-fifth of all serious incidences of water pollution last year.

David King, director of water management at the EA, said recent proposals from water companies contained much to be commended.

The draft proposals cover the period from 2010 to 2015.

He commented "Over the next few months, we will work closely with the water industry, Ofwat, and others to improve their draft documents into final business plans which represent the best solutions for the environment."

Ofwat's periodic review obliges water companies to plan investments with regard to looking after the environment.

The EA is the leading public body for improving and protecting the environment in England and Wales.
