US wastewater facility recognised for excellence

Sep 02 2009

The City of Sioux Falls wastewater utility and the Minnehaha Community Water Corporation have been recognised for wastewater and drinking water excellence by the US Environmental Protection Agency.

In separate ceremonies in Sioux Falls, the companies received the EPA's Performance and Innovation in the State Revolving Fund Creating Environmental Success award for achievements in improving water quality.

Carol Rushin, EPA's acting regional administrator in Denver, said that the water utilities offer potent examples of the type of innovation that will help US communities secure clean water and drinking water for decades to come.

"The City of Sioux Falls and Minnehaha Community Water Corporation have taken clear and proactive steps to improve water quality and protect public health," she said.

Sioux Falls earned the award for activities that directly addressed nonpoint sources of pollution in local waters.

The news comes after the EPA recently announced its renewal of a Puerto Rico power plant's National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit.
