Pump failure 'causes wastewater overflow' in Maui

A pump failure has resulted in an outpouring of semi-treated wastewater in Maui, Hawaii, it has been reported.

The overflow of almost 4,000 gallons was discovered on Sunday in Kihei, according to news provider KGMB9.com.

It is thought the situation was caused by a faulty pump at the Kihei Wastewater Reclamation Facility and was stopped around 45 minutes after the leak was identified.

"Wastewater flowed down the driveway of the facility and into a storm drain on Welakahao Road. The storm drain has no outlet to the ocean.

The spill site was disinfected and the department of health was notified," the news provider stated.

A similar incident occurred at the plant last week when 52 gallons of wastewater overflowed due to grease in the mainline. However, none of the water reached the ocean.

In related news, Florida Today has reported that residents in the Melbourne area of the state are being urged to stay away from stormwater lakes after a wastewater overflow took place last Wednesday.
