Kansas wastewater plant awarded thousands

Improvements to the local wastewater treatment plant were the motivation for the US Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) award of $485,000 (£297,000) to a Kansas city.

The grant project will replace aging components of the Lindsborg wastewater plant - which was originally constructed in 1984 - and increase its efficiency by installing a computerised monitoring and control system.

EPA region 7 acting regional administrator William Rice said: "EPA is proud to award these water infrastructure funds, which will help to protect the water quality of the Smoky Hill River and extend the useful life of the treatment plant."

The project will also upgrade the level of treatment through the construction of extra biological treatment processes to remove nitrogen and phosphorus and improve the treatment of biosolids used on agricultural land.

In related news, the EPA announced earlier this week that it has awarded $203,300,900 to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection to improve aging water and wastewater infrastructure as part of the state's Clean Water and Drinking Water State Revolving Funds programme.
