Bottled water stays on shelves as bill is rejected

Nov 07 2008

A call to ban bottled water in Canada was rejected yesterday by several of the country's political parties, it has emerged.

The bill was proposed by a private liberal member, Kuldip Kular, who said that single-use plastic water bottles present waste issues and exclaimed that he would attempt to raise the subject again in his next term.

As reported by etainews.com, the bill appeared to have gained support but was rejected in parliament.

"I am not opposed to this, I think it's a good idea. It's just the timing," said liberal education minister Kathleen Wynne.

She added that one of her reasons for rejecting the bill was the reliance of many schools on bottled water due to them having lead water pipes.

According to the latest report from the Conference Board of Canada, when it comes to instigating environmentally friendly measures, the country ranks 15th out of 17 developed countries.
