Weighing Precipitation Gauge for Automatic Measurement Networks

Oct 19 2015

OTT Hydromet, the manufacturer based in Kempten, Germany, has recently launched a new precipitation gauge, the OTT Pluvio2 S. This compact precision instrument uses the weighing measuring principle to record the quantity and intensity of liquid, solid and mixed precipitation. Using advanced technology for data recording and processing, it guarantees an impressive measurement accuracy of 0.1 mm.

The new rain gauge uses the same proven measurement methods and technology as its “big brother”, the OTT Pluvio2, which has been available for many years now. However, it is visibly streamlined by comparison and, weighing in at just under 8 kilos, is a lot lighter too. Calibrated for life, drift-free and impervious to ice damage, this instrument requires virtually no maintenance. Just the collecting bucket, which can hold up to 400 mm of precipitation, needs to be emptied when full. Warning messages prevent accidental overflow. Versions with ring heating to prevent the formation of snow caps are also available. As a result, the catch ring always remains unobstructed, even in regions of high snow fall.

“We already have a waiting list of customers for the compact version of the Pluvio2”, says Kurt Nemeth, who, as an expert in meteorological measurement technology, drove the development of the new product. “Conventional precipitation gauges, such as tipping bucket rain gauges, are gradually ageing, and needing to be replaced. And that's where the Pluvio2 S comes in. It doesn't need much space and fits easily on 2-inch standpipes, which means that most existing equipment supports can continue to be used.” That makes switching easy. In addition, precipitation recording is automated and, thanks to an IP-enabled data logger, it runs virtually by itself.

As a precision instrument, the Pluvio2 S is designed for professional use. It is equally suited to use in weather observation networks or automated measurement networks, as used by meteorological services or in urban hydrology, for example.
