Precise and dependable sampling for lower emissions of alternative fuels and raw materials (AFR) at cement kilns

The European Cement Association has claimed that as much as 95% of conventional fuels used in cement production can be substituted with alternative fuels and raw materials (AFR) to enable lower emission levels. Unfortunately, the potential volatility of AFR brings a higher chance of explosions, which can lead to costly kiln delays.

To overcome this difficulty, ABB has introduced ProKiln, a highly advanced and robust inlet gas sampling system that lowers dangerous emissions levels by facilitating the precise measurement of alternative fuels, thereby reducing infrastructure maintenance costs and plant downtime.

A lot of energy is needed for cement production, and as demand for cement increases, so does the energy to produce it. This poses a considerable challenge because governments across the globe are especially focused on lowering the environmental impact of the AFR fuels needed for cement production. In addition, AFR can cause dangerous pockets of incomplete combustion within a kiln, leading to increased risks of explosion and costly kiln stoppage.

ABB’s ProKiln provides permanent and uninterrupted process control in cement rotary kilns. The new kiln inlet gas system includes powerful probe cleaning with heightened mechanical strength - including a dual probe retraction system, which is unique to the market and ensures no sampling interruption.
