Manchester to recycle construction spoil

Oct 24 2008

In a bid to reduce its impact on the environment, Manchester city council is to reduce the amount of spoil from excavated road works that end up in landfills.

The innovative scheme, to be undertaken in partnership with the National Grid, aims to ensure 100 per cent of all excavated highway material is reused in other construction projects, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Councillor Richard Howell, the local authority's executive member for the environment, said the partnership demonstrated the council's green credentials.

"Our highways are a major asset and this joint venture will maintain them at a very high level using the latest technology, while turning the city into a cleaner, greener place to live," he commented.

In related news, a new voluntary agreement launched recently within the UK construction industry aims to halve the amount of waste finding its ways into landfills.
